What Do I Do? ~ Olivia Le Roux
Name: Olivia Le Roux
Job Title: Womenswear Buyer at Selfridges
- What do you do?
I’m a Buyer at Selfridges: Designer Womenswear
- Please describe a typical day.
My days vary depending on the point in the season. I’m based above the store in Oxford Street, which is very dangerous on pay day ;)
I travel a lot throughout the year, ranging between quick day trips to two week stints in Milan and Paris. This is where I do my buys for each season and I’ll typically have 3-5 brand appointments each day, often back-to-back. When in the office, there is always lots to do – from securing exciting pop-ups to negotiating brand terms and analysing consumer trends across our 5 stores in the UK.
- How did you get into your current job? Any tips for anyone aspiring to be a producer?
I read Fashion Management (majoring in Buying & Merchandising) at the London College of Fashion, which helped pave the road to what I wanted to do. I started at Harrods then joined a large conglomerate in Dubai before joining Selfridges two years ago. I’ve now been in buying for over five years and absolutely love it!
There are many facets to the fashion industry, so whether you already know the line of work you want to pursue or still need help finding that out, either way I would recommend choosing a fashion course to study while gaining as much work experience as possible before applying somewhere.
- What skills do you need to bring to be successful at your job?
I would say: being reactive, analytical, personable, creative and having acute attention to detail.
- What’s the best part about your job?
Selecting product from the most amazing brands and seeing them on the rails a few months later.
- What’s the most difficult part of your job?
The speed of change. Things move so quickly that keeping my head above water can be difficult sometimes.
- Does your job involve travelling?
Yes, I’m often travelling and working towards avoiding paying for overweight luggage ;)
- What was your best moment in your job?
Being promoted to buyer last year.
- What are your future ambitions?
My main goal is to maintain a positive trajectory in my career and to keep learning, which comes from being receptive and having good relationships with those around me.
