#Empowered ~ Simone de Beauvior
Simone de Beauvior was, and still is a highly influential figure within the Feminist Movement, as she is seen to have introduced feminist existentialism and feminist theory.
She became most known for The Second Sex (1949), a book that introduced the concept that women are not born but made and shaped by society. Although now a well known and widely accepted idea, de Beauvoir popularised the concept that gender itself is a social construct - and not a way to differentiate between the sex of a man and woman.
Her books are still influential and essential reading for anyone interested in the women's movement today.
“One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.”
